Straight hair care

February 15, 2009 | Filed Under Hair Care | 3 Comments

This info applies to all straight hair, Virgin, Fresh Relaxed, Fresh Relaxed X^2, Kinky Straight, etc etc etc

I will discuss washing, daily maintenance, deep treatments; styling options and what to do when you want to with the hair at bedtime.

Washing:
It’s easy to get carry away with products when washing straight hair. Keep it simple. Do not use heavy shampoos and do not get carry away with products.
I would use something light and simple.
Tip: After each wash do a Apple cider vinegar rinse. The Apple cider vinegar rinse is after washing and conditioning; this is the last step; wash and condition, mix some water with the apple cider vinegar, so the mixture should be two parts water; one part ACV and rinse through the hair, let sit for about five minutes, comb trough and rinse with cold water.

Recommended Shampoo/Clarifying Products:
Baking Soda- Yes, baking soda is simple, cheap and great for straight hair. Mix baking soda with water and pour on the hair; gently work through hair.. and rinse with cold water.
Giovanni Products
Healthy Sexy Hair/Straight Sexy Hair
You can nix the shampoo completely and co-wash; Use diluted conditioner to wash your hair.

Conditioning:
I recommend washing and conditioning weekly;you can get away with biweekly if you are not heavy handed with the products.
Recommended Weekly Conditioning Products:

  • Nexxus Humectress
  • Suave Humectress
  • Healthy Sexy Hair/Straight Sexy Hair
  • Giovanni Products – non sulfate formula

Deep conditioning:
I recommend deep conditioning when you receive your hair prior to installing. After that you can deep condition once in three weeks. You can either deep condition over night or you can deep condition for about 45 mins to an hour wearing a plastic cap to keep heat in- or you can sit under the dryer. Please note that deep conditioning is great for your natural hair also.
Tip: Add Extra Virgin Olive Oil to your deep conditioner.

Deep Conditioning Treatment:

  • Organic Roots Stimulator Hair Mayonnaise
  • Aphogee 2 minute Keratin treatment – I strongly advise against using the protein treatment as its very drying.
  • Nexxus Humectress

Daily Care:
On a daily basis; I will suggest using very little products on your hair. I am currently wearing straight hair- a mixture of straight hair; and I use a little Straight Sexy hair serum daily, or I use a little Nexxus Conditoner and use a little EVOO (extra virgin olive oil) to seal the moisture in-you may also use a moisture block like Sabino moisture block or Motions Humectant to keep the hair straight and frizz free.

Bedtime:
Here are a few options: (what ever you decide it’s important to not sleep on wet hair.)

  • Wrap the hair
  • Put the hair in a ponytail and wear a silk bonnet or a silk scarf.
  • Wear sponge or silk rollers to sleep.

Do’s and Don’ts:

  • Don’t use too much heat on the hair as it will damage the cuticles – I use heat on my current install once every week – on wash day.
  • Do use a heat protectant when straightening your hair
  • Do treat your extension like an investment and do not abuse it.
  • Do use rollers to get your curls to last a long time; when you use the curling irons the curls will fall and the irons may be damaging.
  • Do use Wella Color Charms or L’oreal Color Gems to color your hair; please try not to use the box colors- if you color do regular deep conditioning treatment.

Tools:
Round Brush: I bought a round brush with soft bristles at Sally’s and my straight hair loves it! This is a great tool for blending your natural hair into the weave hair and also creating great body without using heat!
Ceramic Iron: It does not have to be expensive- however to keep your hair straight and not burn off all the cuticles you need a ceramic iron
Preheated rollers: This is great for making your curls last longer

Some more tips:
When installing straight hair; try to double the tracks per braid, this will make your hair denser and less prone to frizzes and tangles.
When wearing a wool coat, put your hair up in a ponytail or pull it to the front
Do cut your hair- layering straight hair provides so much body and movement- its unfortunate that people are always scare to cut/layer their hair, I have customers that are so reluctant of ordering one step longer because they do not want to cut the hair, its best to always cut/layer the hair to fit your frame and face shape.
Seal your wefts to prolong the life of the hair.

Please pick your stylist wisely! A good stylist is even more important than your hair in my opinion. Make sure your stylist is aware of your styles options and she should be able to give you tips on caring for your hair.

Most importantly; its just hair; do not over stress yourself about the small details- also find something that works for you and stick with it! There will be 100000+ new tips and new tools etc etc, but if it’s not broken don’t fix it. Find your regime and stick with it!

Please let me know if you have any comments or questions!

Thanks!

Swimming With Extensions

Tips for swimming: (this works regardless of whether you are wearing a weave or not)

  1. Pull your hair into a ponytail. Braid the ponytail in a loose braid. Use a ponytail holder or barrette to keep the braid from coming loose.. This will keep your hair under control and help minimize tangles and matting.
  2. Rinse your hair THOROUGHLY with fresh water before you get in the pool/ocean. Your hair is a sponge, and it will absorb the fresh water which will help to minimize the amount of pool/salt water that the hair shaft will absorb.
  3. If you will not be washing your hair IMMEDIATELY after swimming (sun bathing, etc), rinse your hair thoroughly when you get out of the water. You can follow-up by smoothing a moisturizing or leave-in conditioner on your hair, combing it through and putting the hair back in a ponytail. (you don’t have to use an expensive conditioner for this. an inexpensive conditioner — like Suave — will do)
  4. Use a good clarifying shampoo such as Nexxus Aloe Rid after swimming. This shampoo will remove the chlorine and salt from the hair shaft. Follow up with your regular shampoo and conditioning routine. (You should use a moisturizing shampoo & conditioner for best results after swimming)
